The MCCC, the college presidents, and the Board of Higher Education all agree that the points system is essential to the classification system.
Points are part of the classification system as applied to full-time unit members.
Points are numerical values you receive based upon various criteria that were determined by an outside consultant (DMG Maximus) to relate to your professional position. The numerical values also were set by the consultant, loosely based upon criteria mutually set by the Board of Higher Education and the MCCC.
The points are shown in point grids. Faculty Grid Professional Staff Grid
When you are hired you should be assigned a salary based upon the classification system's salary as determined for you. Your points are based upon the grid.
After your initial appointment your points are determined based upon a "snapshot" of your professional situation every October. You get points for one more year of service, promotion (faculty), a new, higher degree or more hours of study, a satisfactory post-tenure evaluation... all the things that are in the grid.
The points are computed related to your situation and the grid, and are paid on the following April 1.
Faculty evaluations are completed by February 1. Professional staff evaluations are completed by June 1. A satisfactory summary evalutation, after receiving tenure, is counted towards your point total on the snapshot taken in October; it adds 10 points to your point total.

Ultimately the employer must tell you since the employer makes the judgement about the application of the criteria to you. For example, determining whether certain past experience applies to your current position is a judgement call made by the employer - though you can appeal the employer's decision.
Since your salary is supposed to be set by a formula, it is theoretically possible to work backwards from your salary to obtain the number of points you have been assigned. The Excel worksheet here is designed to do this - realizing this is difficult to apply to many individuals.
While you may want to estimate your points when considering the
new agreement, the employer will have to list the number of points
for every full-time member and make these known to the unit member.
After that, it is everyone's job to keep track of how many points
they should have!
